Bill Evans and Megan Lynch Concert $15 in advance, $18 at the door
Since teaming up as a touring duo two years ago, San Francisco Bay
Area and Nashville bluegrass mainstays Bill Evans & Megan Lynch
have toured widely through the United States, Canada, the United
Kingdom and Ireland. Spanning a thirty-five year professional
performing career, banjo player and Banjo For Dummies author Bill
Evans has performed with Dry Branch Fire Squad, Peter Rowan, David
Grisman, Hazel Dickens, Laurie Lewis, Jody Stecher, Kathy Kallick,
Bluegrass Intentions and his own Bill Evans String Summit. His two
CDs “Native and Fine” (Rounder Records) and “Bill Evans Plays
Banjo” (Native and Fine Records) topped critics’ lists and the
Bluegrass Unlimited charts. Folks know Nashville resident Megan
Lynch from her National Championship fiddling credentials and from
her performances with 3 Fox Drive, Due West, Dale Ann Bradley, Tony
Trischka, Chris Jones, Roland White and Jim Hurst.
Together, Bill Evans & Megan Lynch make music that’s going to
surprise you. It’s much more than a fiddle and banjo duo. While
virtuosic instrumental work is to be expected from these musicians,
it’s the outstanding lead singing of Megan and the pair’s rich duo
vocal sound that is a revelation. Drawing on singer-songwriter and
alternative rock sources as much as traditional old-time and
bluegrass music, the duo creates music that’s intensely intimate
but truly difficult to categorize. While rooted in bluegrass
tradition, Bill Evans and Megan Lynch display a natural and
unassuming sophistication that reflects their wide-ranging interest
in many kinds of contemporary and popular music.

right kinds of songs for you, what keys are good choices for your
voice, and where on earth to find those darn harmony parts. Bring

This will be a practical, easy to understand “hands-on, bring your
banjo and let’s pick” kind of workshop that’s open to all players
but ideally designed for musicians with one or more years of banjo
playing experience. We’ll cover practical and easy to learn
techniques that you can put to immediate use to hold in your next
band rehearsal or jam session. Topics to be discussed include
movable chord shapes for vamping, up-the-neck backup using the F
and D shapes and the “In The Mood” roll, down-the-neck backup using
forward rolls and target tones, how to use Earl Scruggs’ great
backup licks to enhance your sound, how to “hear” chord
progressions, using the capo and back-up aesthetics (when to do
what!), fiddle tune and slow-song backup and much more. Tab
examples will be presented for everything that will be covered in
the session but it’s not necessary to read tab well to get a lot
out of this workshop. Audio and/or video recording is encouraged.
Stop by the store any Thursday evening from 7:30 – 10:00 for our Acoustic Jam. Everyone is welcome. Come to play, or to watch.
